We were to design a logo for finance department of a multinational beverage company and the client wanted it not to carry a stereotype “number cruncher” image. As a brief, they told us that their logo should give the messages of a Trusted Business Partner, Energy, Collaboration and Enabler. Other than that, for inspiration, they gave us nine logos shortlisted out of 70 in-house developed concepts.
After discussing such a complex brief the designer was trying to make something original yet relevant to finance whereas I was trying to keep him away from typical finance concepts. It is a situation where Designer and Art Director both start feeling stressed as Designer wants it to look pretty whereas Art Director wants it to be meaningful (as per client’s brief). It takes both of them to like each others skills in order to come up with something praise worthy. Our first four options knocked out all other contestant agencies but it took us to design almost nine more logos to finally get one selected. Client’s hunch was towards presenting finance department as “bass clef” (a musical symbol) among other departments so one of our depiction of this concept turned out to be the selected logo.
